Zanzibar has been home to humans for at least 20,000 years
A Greco-Roman text between the 1st and 3rd centuries, the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, mentioned the island of Menuthias (Ancient Greek: Μενουθιάς), which is probably Unguja. Zanzibar, like the nearby coast, was settled by Bantu-speakers at the outset of the first millennium.
ZANZIBAR IS COMPRISED OF SEVERAL ISLANDS, THIS IS THE LARGER ONE
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometres (16–31 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba Island.
ZANZIBAR HAS BEEN HOME TO VERY INTELLIGENT HUMANS
Zanzibar has been home to intelligent humans for more than 20,000 years. Throughout history, the Persians, Portuguese, Omani and British have fought to control the important island. It was seen as a gateway to mainland East Africa. In fact, the Sultanate of Omani was the first to trade slaves, cloves and ivory from East African Mainland.
APART FROM TOURISM, THE OTHER ECONOMIC ACTIVITY IN ZANZIBAR IS GROWING
Apart from tourism, the other economic activity in Zanzibar is spice growing. In fact, the island is sometimes fondly referred to as The Spice Island due to its cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. Fishing and pottery also massively boost the economy.
THE ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR BOASTS PRISTINE WHITE SAND AND TOURIST RESORTS
Zanzibar’s beaches are justifiably famous. Fine white sands edge clear turquoise waters, traditional Arabic dhows sail into the dawn, silhouetted against pastel-tinted skies. Coconut palms wave gently in the breeze. The beaches on Zanzibar’s east coast and around its northern tip offer a quintessential tropical island paradise. Each beach has its own personality.
ZANZIBAR CITY AND ITS MOST HISTORIC FEATURE IS THE ANCIENT STONE TOWN
Zanzibar Town is the island’s main settlement, and the historical old Stone Town is its heart and soul. It’s also a wonderful spot to get immersed in island rhythms. Start exploring at Forodhani Gardens, a lively stretch of seafront where Zanzibaris of all ages gather in the early evening to watch the sun go down and enjoy the passing scene.
